Conference “The historic train for the territorial connection of the archaeological destinations”

  • Conference in the context of the “European Year of Rail” announced by European Commission for 2021

MiBACT declared 2020 “the year of the tourism train”, and the opening ceremony scheduled for February 25th was cancelled for the occurred sanitary crisis.
The choice, according to the declarations of Minister Franceschini, aimed to “promote another form of tourism, that lets the traveller go through our country in a sustainable way and along railways’ historic routes, admiring magnificent landscapes and visiting places of moving beauty. There are 800 kilometres of disused and abandoned railways, crossing national parks, protected areas and territories full of history and culture”.
Trains represent the ancient progress, the productivity and connection of the small centers they cross, and focusing on tourism railways, particularly on the historic ones, travellers can rediscover an immense heritage, made of ancient layouts, galleries and old convoys that re-invoke the past of our country. Fondazione FS, in the context of the routes interested by historic trains, pays great attention to the territories with archaeological destinations.

In Campania tourists have an ample offer of itineraries, from “Archeotreno Campania” (from Naples to Sapri with stops at Hercolaneum, Pompeii, Paestum, Ascea Velia) to “Reggia Express” and “Pietrarsa Express”.
The train “Colori e sapori di Sicilia in un viaggio slow” has 23 itineraries and connects the most important urban centers (Catania, Palermo, Messina) with places that guard unique tastes (Modica, Bronte and Marsala) and thousand-year old old towns (Taormina, Siracusa, Agrigento, Ragusa Ibla).
In Tuscany with the steam train from Siena to Murlo “Paesaggio, Natura, Etruschi e…” it’s possible to discover the beauty of Terre di Siena with a mean of transportation and a speed of other times.
